Would you identify the perennials that are in the picture of the third-year growth, above? I'm never happy with my plant combinations.

Phyllis, I’ve been thinking more about your question and would like to write a column about plant combinations with focus on root types and other non-visible aspects of compatibility. I would appreciate if you would expand on it with some examples and specifics of your location. Please email me if you have time at dearavantgardener@gmail.com

Well, this is embarrassing! I prefer to show only US native plants -- or at least put a warning when I do not. But I went back and checked Diblik's book and of the flowering plants I could identify above, only Geranium maculatum -- middle right -- is native. The purple spikes at the bottom right are Salvia nemorosa from Europe (I had assumed it was anise hyssop) and West Central Asia and the pompom-like ones above and to the left are Sesleria autumnalis from Southern Europe. That said, Diblik has lots of experience with the plant combinations he recommends in his book.
